Overview

Road safety audit and inspections serve the common purpose of identifying risk factors related to road design or traffic control that may lead to crashes, or make crashes more severe. In many cases, they also assist network highway operators and city traffic departments in identifying engineering weaknesses and hazardous locations, even in the absence of robust traffic injury data.

Almost 85% of countries surveyed by the World Health Organization currently report implementing road safety audits or inspections, and it is important for all road safety professionals to understand how to design and implement them correctly for maximum safety benefits.

The lectures will be taught over a three-week period with live 2-hour on-line sessions held Monday through Thursday. Upon completion of the training program, the IRF will administer an on-line knowledge test. Participants with a score of 80% of the exam will be awarded with a certificate verifying their successful completion of the course. Participants will also be given the opportunity to apply for the IRF Road Safety Professional Credentials.

Michael G. Dreznes

Michael G. Dreznes assumed his current position of Executive Vice-President of the International Road Federation (IRF) in February of 2012. Dreznes has spent the last thirty –four years working to make the roads safer around the world. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading specialists on roadside safety promoting the concept of “Forgiving Roads,” and has conducted multiple road safety training seminars on roadside safety, work zone safety, vulnerable user safety and road safety audit in more than sixty countries around the world. Dreznes served as the Co-Chairman of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) AFB20 (2) Roadside Safety SubCommittee on International Research Activities for eighteen years from 2001 to 2019. Dreznes is the Co-Chairman of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) Decade of Action Pillar 2: Safer Roads and Mobility Project Group, and a member of the PIARC Road Safety Technical Committee 3.2 Design and Operation of Safer Road Infrastructure. In January 2015, Dreznes was named the winner of the TRB AFB20 Roadside Safety Design Kenneth Stonex Lifetime Achievement Award. In September 2020, Dreznes was presented the Puerto Rico Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) 2020 Road Safety International Ambassador Award.

John Aldridge

John’s expertise includes Road Safety Audit and Inspections, Road Safety Strategy documents, crash investigation and analysis, development of road safety engineering measures, manuals and road safety policy. In addition to completing capacity building for Client staff in Road Safety Audit and road safety services, John has conducted Road Safety Audits on many international projects. Recently this has included projects in Antigua, Ukraine, Albania, Belarus and Montenegro. In recent years John has completed Road Safety Audits throughout the Balkans, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uganda, Tonga, Moldova, Ireland and the UK.

Shaun Lennard

Shaun is recognised globally for his experience and expertise in motorcycle safety. He holds a Certificate in Road Safety Audit, Investigation and Treatment of Crash Locations from the Queensland University of Technology, and is an IRF-certified Safe Roads by Design Practitioner. He has also been a motorcycle rider for more than 35 years. His area of specialisation is making roads safer for motorcyclists.
Shaun was closely involved with the development of the Austroads’ report AP-R515-16, “Infrastructure Improvements to Reduce Motorcycle Casualties”. He is a member of the Australasian College of Road Safety and of the US Transportation Research Board’s sub-committee on international research activities into roadside safety design.

Radek has over twenty years of experience in infrastructure, technical assistance and consultancy projects in Central Europe. He has been involved in a number of projects in transport infrastructure focusing on road safety, roads and railways, municipal infrastructure and services involving also public private partnerships and project finance mechanisms. During his professional career he was involved in the preparation and implementation of infrastructure investments, as well as studies and technical assistance projects for a number of public and private sector entities in Poland, Romania, Croatia, Ukraine and other countries.
