Safer Roads By Design™ Across Six Continents
The “Safer Roads By Design™: Across Six Continents Seminar” is one of the most comprehensive road safety training programs in the world. Experts from a variety of countries will present best practices and state of the art technologies in Roadside Safety, Work Zone Safety, Vulnerable User Safety, Traffic Management and Road Safety Audits over a ten day period. The purpose of this training program is to help road authorities understand what can be done to help them meet their Decade of Action commitment to reduce fatalities by 50 percent by 2020. The training program will focus on: Roadside Safety, Work Zone Safety, Vulnerable User Safety, and Road Safety Audits.

Roadside Safety
Attendees will be exposed to all aspects of Roadside Safety, including longitudinal barriers, crash cushions, terminals and transitions. They will be introduced to the existing products, and they will be taught the importance of site specific data to determine the most appropriate product for a particular application.
Upon completion of the Roadside Safety training, attendees will have a clear understanding of methods to identify dangerous roadside hazards and will understand how to choose the correct option to correct the situation. They will be aware of the best practices and state of the art technologies that could be used to make roadsides safer.
Work Zone Safety
Work Zone Safety will be discussed in detail. Attendees will learn how to design a safe work zone and they will learn about the newest technologies for work zone safety. How to use positive protection, truck mounted attenuators, dynamic, variable message signs and flagger training will be among the topics discussed.
Upon completion of the Work Zone Safety training, attendees will be aware of MUTCD recommended procedures to design safe work zones. They will be exposed to different technologies and methodologies that could be used to make work zones safer.
Vulnerable User Safety
Vulnerable User Safety is a significant issue for many countries, especially developing countries. This seminar will discuss the reasons pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, public transportation vehicles and non-motorized vehicles are involved in impacts that result in fatalities and serious injuries. The corrective actions that can be taken to reduce these impacts will be discussed in detail.
Upon completion of the Vulnerable User Safety training, the attendees will understand the issues facing pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist, public transport and non-motorized vehicle safety. Attendees will be presented different strategies that could be used to improve safety for all vulnerable users.

Road Safety Audits
Road Safety Audits are required in many countries and their use is becoming more popular every day. Attendees will be introduced to the concept of road safety audit and taught how to create a road safety audit team. Attendees will participate in an actual road safety audit as a part of the seminar. They will be taught how to prepare a road safety audit report and how to present it to the road authorities.
Upon completion of the Road Safety Audit training, attendees will understand what a road safety audit is, the different stages of road safety audits, how to create a road safety audit team and how to conduct a road safety audit. Attendees will comprehend the steps involved to organize and implement an effective road safety audit.
Traffic Management
Road design and traffic management have direct impact on a motorist’s safety. A good integration of different traffic management strategies, including intersection control, coupled with sound facility design can make the motorist’s driving task easier. The utilization of roundabouts has proven to effectively enhance capacity as well as motorist’s safety at road junctions.
Upon completion of the Traffic Management training, attendees will have a clear understanding of the strong link between the different aspects of traffic operations of road and the safety of the motorists. Attendees will learn how junctions are designed and controlled, how much capacity and safety roundabouts offer motorists, how to collect data to assess performance of roads, and how technology can be utilized to enhance operations and safety of roads.

Michael Dreznes / Executive Vice President, International Road Federation
Michael Dreznes assumed his current position of Executive Vice President of the International Road Federation in February 2012. Prior to accepting his position at the IRF, Dreznes was Vice President of Barrier Systems Inc. for four years. He served as the Deputy Director General of the Washington Program Center of the International Road Federation from July 2006 to February 2008. He worked as Vice President of Marketing and International Operations at Quixote Corporation (Energy Absorption Systems, Inc.) for 20 years, beginning in 1986. Dreznes has spent the last 26 years working to make the roads safer around the world. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on roadside safety promoting the concept of “Forgiving Highways,” and has conducted multiple road safety training seminars in more than 50 countries around the world.

Dane Ismart
Dane Ismart has a BSCE degree from Georgia Tech and MSCE degree from the University of
Minnesota. He was with the Federal Highway Administration for 26 years and held positions as an area engineer, research engineer, urban planner, and intermodal team leader. During the last 14 years Ismart has served as a senior associate with the Louis Berger Group and has recently conducted a series of research projects on traffic modeling and operations. Ismart’s FHWA research includes the development of primers for application of traffic engineering simulation software, evaluating and developing techniques to reduce business impacts due to traffic construction, and examining methods to reduce traffic congestion on the Washington DC Beltway. He is a senior instructor for NHI, TxDOT, McTrans, and the LTAP Centers for Virginia and Maryland. His seminars include instructions on traffic engineering, travel demand forecasting, innovative financing, access management, highway capacity analysis, site impact, and the Federal-aid process. Recently he was selected as the lead instructor for the Highways for LIFE seminars on innovative techniques for construction and maintenance of traffic, and conducted regional seminars for FHWA’s Bottleneck Initiative to identify and to eliminate recurring and non-recurring congestion.

Essam Radwan // Ph.D., P.E., F. ASCE
Essam Radwan is the Interim Chair, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He also serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Systems Simulation (CATSS). Prior to this assignment he served as the college the Associate Dean for Research and Administration. He received a BS degree in Civil Engineering with honors from Cairo University, Egypt and an MS and a Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University. In 1978, he started his teaching career at Virginia Tech where he was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor then he moved to Arizona State University in 1984 and was promoted to full professor in 1990. Through a national search he was recruited to UCF to chair the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and he remained in that position till 2003. In 1998 he was appointed to be the founding Director of the federally established transportation center (CATSS).
