Bike Lane Design, Color and Durable Material Specifications
Low stress bikeway design is a key buzzword today, but they key to this is safer streets for all users, and is a national effort. It is not about just adding bikeways to roads to create low stress bikeways, but separation that is properly designed that is a integral part of that effort. The design of bikeways must also include design of conflict points and intersections that take into consideration all types of users, how roads operate, configuration intersections and the durability and visibility of the materials used to demarcate the lane and conflict points. Green bike lane surfacing is a safety feature that communicates to road users that a portion of the roadway has been set aside for preferential or dedicated use by bicyclists and serves as a continuous reminder to drivers of the possibility of the presence of bicyclists as they merge or change lanes.

Paul Wojciechowski is a transportation planner and engineer with over 28 years of experience in planning and designing innovative transportation facilities, and integrating these facilities to function with adjacent land-uses. Paul has dedicated his career to public projects that enhance communities and regional systems, and has contributed ideas for development projects that achieve community goals, including award-winning projects such as the regional Gateway Bike Plan in St. Louis and the City of Woodson Terrace Comprehensive Plan.
In a consultant role, his work has included street design, bikeway and pedestrian facility design, transit projects, land-use planning, program management, transportation planning, and utility relocation. In addition, he has served in public official roles as Director of Public Works/City Engineer for the City of Clayton, and at the Missouri Department of Transportation, where he has dealt with client responsibilities first hand. In his 17 years at MoDOT, he was involved in a variety of positions such as the Transportation Planning Manager responsible for all transportation planning activities in the St. Louis Metro District, programming of state and federal funds, and the main point of contact with the East-West Gateway Council of Governments. He also served in highway design, traffic engineering, utilities engineering, and project management capacities.

Michael S. Stenko is President and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S company Transpo Industries, Inc. He has over 35 years experience working in the transportation industry.Mike helped design the companies Omni-Directional Breakaway Support systems for highway signs and luminaries. A system currently used as the standard by many agencies in the United States.As a prominent member of the industry, Mike Stenko serves on numerous committees; his memberships include TRB, ACI, ASCE, and past Chair of AASHTO/AGC/ARTBA Taskforce 13 on highway signs and luminaries. He is currently serving on the board of directors of ARTBA.
Mr. Stenko has been involved in many global initiatives including those sponsored by AASHTO and FHWA. He has created and given accredited technical presentations to State DOT’s and engineering design firms.
He is a Civil Engineer with a degree from Lehigh University.
