Across the African continent, the end of the pandemic has witnessed a surge in road construction projects which are expected to boost regional integration by reducing transit times, facilitating trade and cross-border movement of people, opening up access to tourism, and stimulating the economy.

Against this backdrop, achieving Africa’s regional connectivity vision remains hinged on delivering climate-resilient transportation corridors, achieving efficiency gains through improved procurement, financing and contract management, and ensuring a higher level of service and safety to all road users. The 3rd IRF Africa Regional Congress & Exhibition pursues the objective of exploring a range of policies and mechanisms aimed at offering policy makers practical options to ensure road & transportation program continue supporting the region’s sustainable development goals and socio-economic objectives.

The Award is open to any category of applicant (public agency, academic & research institutions, private contractors, engineering consultancies, etc.) regardless of their country of establishment, provided the project, product or process has been rolled out in an African country or explicitly addresses African markets. Each category will recognize up to three sub-categories representing “best in class” practices for project design, project delivery, and project promotion. Winning entries will be presented at the Opening Ceremony of the 3rd IRF Africa Regional Congress.

Categories

The Award recognizes project in the following categories: • Road Safety: Entries in this category should demonstrate significant contributions to improving road safety on African roads by devising concepts, products, processes and/or systems in relation to road infrastructure, road/vehicle interaction or driver behavior. Entries will be evaluated on successful and possibly quantified efforts to reduce road casualty numbers and/or seriousness. • Urban Mobility & Traffic Management: This category recognizes efforts to plan and develop Africa’s cities, responding to the twin challenges of enhanced mobility demand and reduced environmental footprint. Winning projects will demonstrate their systemic impact, notably by fostering seamless connections across travel modes or by y using advanced or original traffic management concepts to accommodate present and future traffic. • Resilient Infrastructure Entries in this category will demonstrate significant achievements in building or maintaining road infrastructure assets (including road bridges and tunnels) expected to withstand expected climate impacts such as changes in rainfall, flooding, and sea-level rise as well as extreme weather events. Winning projects may include vulnerability assessment tools and technologies designed to provided redundancy and resilience.

Application process:

The application package must include: 1. A completed application form 2. A project summary (<500 words) explaining how the project meets the criteria of the category in which it has been submitted 3. Supporting explanatory materials including slides, photographs, drawings, diagrams, or videos (max 4 supporting materials for each application) Incomplete applications will not be considered. All materials must clearly identify the name of the project as well as the award category. The selection panel is not obligated to select an award recipient in each category. Rather, the panel will recognize only those submissions that show outstanding merit. The panel also has the discretion to recognize submissions that do not win an award, yet show exceptional merit. Entries are open to projects that may have been recognized in other award programs, provided that they have not been recognized in a previous IRF competition. There is no limit to the number of entries an organization may submit.
